Power Struggle at the Greens: Guy Ingerson Benched Weeks After Ousting Maggie Chapman

Less than a year before Scotland goes to the polls, the Scottish Greens have quietly suspended one of their leading Holyrood candidates — and are refusing to say why.

Guy Ingerson, who only months ago ousted sitting MSP Maggie Chapman to become the party’s lead list candidate in the North East, has been placed on a “no-fault suspension” following a complaint to party headquarters.

A spokesperson confirmed:

“Guy Ingerson has been issued with a no-fault suspension pending the investigation of a complaint. The party will not be issuing any further comment while the investigation is ongoing.”

Ingerson declined to comment.

It’s the latest twist in a long-running feud that’s been simmering inside the Greens since last year. In June, The National and Press & Journal reported that Ingerson had accused Chapman of bullying — claiming she contacted his employer in 2024 to suggest he was “untrustworthy” and should be “watched.” Chapman’s earlier complaint against Ingerson was dismissed.

Now the tables have turned: a new complaint has landed, and Ingerson is the one on hold. The party won’t confirm if the two disputes are linked, but insiders are treating this as part of the same toxic fallout between rival factions.

The Greens’ official line is procedural — “no-fault suspension” is their term for parking a member while a complaint is investigated — but the timing is politically awkward. Ingerson had been due to spearhead the party’s North East campaign for the next Holyrood election, just months away.

With co-leader Lorna Slater already under pressure after a bruising year for the party, the suspension adds another crack to the Greens’ image of unity and discipline. It also raises the question of who exactly will lead their regional push if Ingerson’s suspension drags on into the campaign.

For now, the Greens are staying silent — but in the North East, it looks like the fight for the top spot never really ended.
