Edinburgh’s own samwooddoowmas returns with the launch of Beat, a double-part album paying homage to two divergent traditions in dance music: industrial techno and breaks. This latest work comes from a neurodivergent artist known for pushing sound into unexpected places, using everything from tape loops to field recordings to craft music that is raw, experimental, and uncompromising.

Under the name samwooddoowmas, Sam Wood has steadily built a reputation across Scotland’s DIY and experimental scenes. His previous releases — from alphabet (a reflection on dyslexia and memory) to Modes of Transportation (built from field recordings of cars, trains, oceans and birds) — show a practice that blends personal experience with adventurous sound design. Live, he is equally unpredictable, having performed everywhere from Berlin art spaces to Edinburgh basements, often bending instruments and environments to his will.

Beat takes this restless spirit onto the dance floor, twisting the weight of hardcore and techno with the fractured edges of breakcore. It’s less about purity of genre and more about collision — two distinct traditions meeting head-on through the filter of an artist who thrives on dismantling boundaries.

Expect an evening that captures that energy in full: dense electronics, jagged rhythms, and the sense of being pushed into somewhere new. Presented by Microsteria and Other Other Music, this launch celebrates not just an album, but a body of work that insists dance music can be as experimental as it is physical.
